Tonight At 7.30

About the play

Noël Coward was a prolific writer and by 1936 had ready a handful of short plays assembled as a vehicle for Gertrude Lawrence and himself. ‘Tonight at Eight-Thirty’ consisted of nine one-act plays of which ‘Fumed Oak’ and ‘Still Life’ were two.
Coward said that he loved playing both. In the former he played Henry Gow to Miss Lawrence’s Doris Gow, whilst in the latter he played Alec Harvey to her Laura Jesson. ‘Still Life was later made into the film ‘Brief Encounter’ which starred Celia Johnson and Trevor Howard.
