In 1920, a group of amateur enthusiasts led by Laurence Steele and Eric Pidduck, supported by members of Stoke-on-Trent Operatic Society, formed the Stoke-on-Trent Dramatic Society and began to rehearse a production of ‘Caste’ by Tom Robertson.

On 17th February, 1921 a matinee performance took place at The Empire Theatre, Longton to raise money for charity.

The play was performed later that year at The Assembly Hall, Stoke, alternating with The Chinese Puzzle, The Thief and A Pair Of Silk Stockings.
