Milestones

The Repertory Players hired the Theatre Royal, Hanley for the ambitious double-bill of Milestones by Arnold Bennett and Edward Knoblock, alternating with Jack Straw by Somerset Maugham with proceeds going to the North Staffs Infirmary and the Cripples’ Aid Society

Through their links with the British Drama League they were able to hire a professional Director, James Whale – an appointment that was approved by Bennett himself. James Whale later went on to become a famous Hollywood Director of horror films.

Unfortunately, the venture was a financial disaster, leaving the Players struggling to survive. A number of local businesses rallied around to help raise money to pay off their debts and, The Repertory Players proceed more cautiously whilst seeking to acquire a more permanent home for rehearsal and productions.
