“Playwright Ken Ludwig is to contemporary domestic stage comedy what Arthur Miller was to the dramatic theater of his time.”
— CONTRA COSTA TIMES
In previous years, Stoke Rep Players have performed two of over 30 plays by the great comic playwright, Ken Ludwig.
USA Today wrote – “Ken Ludwig’s Moon Over Buffalo packs more comic genius onto the stage than anything in recent memory!” In 2003 we produced this work of genius with Dave Finn and Alison Wicks in the staring roles (played in London by Frank Langella and Joan Collins). And in 2018 it was the turn of Lend Me A Tenor. Lend Me a Tenor won two Tony Awards and was called “one of the classic comedies of the 20th century” by The Washington Post.
As we prepare to embark on our third Ludwig outing – The Game’s Afoot: or Holmes For The Holidays – we consider what are Ken’s favourite plays?
Ken Ludwig states that:
“My favorite plays are virtually all comedies. They start with the great Shakespeare comedies – and my favorites there are Twelfth Night, A Midsummer Night’s Dream and Much Ado About Nothing. Each one launched a separate tradition of comedy that exists to this day. And each one is simply jaw-droppingly great.”

Of the twentyfive comedies that Ken Ludwig names, we have performed no fewer than fourteen – some, more than once in our hundred-year history.
Long may the tradition of great comedy continue!
